In this tutorial, I'll teach you how to make your 3d creation all cool looking. You use the material editor in 3d studio max to achieve this effect.
You should already have finished your basic shape (a noised teapot, twist, star crystal, etc). So I'll start from there. Press M on your keyboard. A box should popup with a bunch of spere shape things at the top and some stuff underneath.
For this tutorial, we'll learn how to make a basic shiny semi-transparent figure. Choose Phone under the Shader Basic Properties. Click the 2-Sided check box. You can edit the other stuff yourself to achieve the effect you want. You can use my settings if you want. (click here)
OK, you may notice that with every change you make, the orb at the top which you originally selected is changing to give you a preview. Once you like your settings, click on the orb which you edited and drag it onto your figure in perspective view. You will notice that it will change to match your material editor settings. Now render it and this is what I got.
