Final Product: Greymatter smilies

Download gmsmilies.zip and unzip it.
Make a folder in your Greymatter folder and name it "emoticons". Upload your smilies there.
In gm-library.cgi, make sure it matches the current Greymatter version you use.
Overwrite your current gm-library.cgi with the one you just downloaded. Chmod to 666 if needed.
Login to Greymatter and rebuild your files.
Go to Edit Templates > Edit Karma & Comments-Related Templates. Under {{entrycommentsform}}, replace what is there now with this code. (CLICK HERE)
Now you should have some cool smilies in your Greymatter blogs! You can change out the smilies by uploading new ones into your emoticons folder, but make sure the smilies have the same filename!
